There’s decorating… and then there’s making your home look worthy of Joanna Gaines’ approval. As many of our communities come together, our team at Borror decided to ask our resident “expert” for five top decorating ideas for 2017. Lori Steiner, President at Borror, has some specific ideas to share that will make your space “designer-ready!”
1. Accessorize with trendy items, but always remember that timeless pieces are memorable.
Most of the time there is a way to pull your favorite things together and make it work. Love the antique piecrust table from your grandma’s house that is still in perfect condition? You can make it work with a contemporary-style couch in cream velvet and fun pillows with an updated flair. “Combining pieces that embrace trends with the comfort of family nostalgia is always a hit,” Steiner said.
2. Don’t over-accessorize to the point that it creates clutter.
While accessories are great, do not over-accessorize. Coco Chanel once said, “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one [accessory] off.” The same applies to your home. Once you arrange accessories on a surface area, take one item off.
3. Use paint to your advantage.
This is the simplest trick in the decorator book! Paint the ceiling two shades lighter than the walls for an intimate, warm experience.
4. Uniform floors is the way to go.
Uniform flooring can make your space look much larger than it really is as opposed to having mixed flooring. Having the same flooring throughout each level of the house will create a more expansive area.
5. Embrace the season.
A seasonal wreath displayed on your door always makes a statement. “I have a perfect one for every season,” Steiner said. In addition, you can add seasonal flowers and scented candles to not only make the house a home but to add a seasonal touch inside.
Decorating is essentially playing up a house’s strengths to make it look great. With the spring season upon us, how do YOU plan on freshening the look of your home?
