Fitness Craze of the Urban Suburbanite

Are you familiar with the Urban Suburbanite? This is someone who’s drawn to the energy of living in an urban area, yet appreciates their own space, yards and garages. These folks are often moving closer to the urban core after years of living in the suburbs—and there are lots of them in Columbus!

Those accustomed to life in the suburbs will appreciate the amenities at communities like The Prescott and The Jerome, offering chic Short North residences with covered and secured garage parking along with fantastic outdoor living spaces with patios, gas grills and stone fireplaces.

Perhaps surprisingly, downtown living also offers plenty of opportunities to stay fit. Whether your exercise of choice is running, biking, kayaking or yoga, you’ll find appealing options throughout the Short North and downtown Columbus.

If yoga is part of your daily routine, you’ll love the easy access to beloved yoga studios including Yoga on High, Thank Yoga and V Power Yoga. Yoga on High is one of the city’s longest running studios, offering a variety of classes for any skill level. Thank Yoga draws a largely Millennial crowd, while V Power Yoga is a favorite for those who work downtown.

When 985 High opens later this year, one of the first tenants to go in will be Orangetheory Fitness. Stop in to try Orangetheory’s one-hour interval training workout and you’ll understand why this fitness craze is sweeping the country.

From Victorian Village, it’s easy to hop on the Olentangy Trail. Bike, run or walk this scenic trail running along the Olentangy River from downtown Columbus to Worthington. The trail even winds through neighborhood parks like Antrim and Whetstone.

If you’re downtown, head over to the Scioto Greenway Trails. Running along the Scioto River, these trails hit Columbus attractions including Confluence Park, Berliner Park, Bicentennial Park, Scioto Audubon, COSI and Veterans Memorial.

Or explore the river by boat thanks to the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department’s Paddle in the City program. In fall of 2017, the program offered weekly guided kayak and canoe classes on the Scioto and Olentangy rivers. In 2018, the offerings will be extended to spring, summer and fall. The 2018 Paddle in the City season kicks off May 5 and runs through Oct. 28.
