3 Steps To Creating the Perfect Work From Home Space in Your Apartment

Maybe you have always worked as a freelancer or telecommuted from your apartment, or maybe you have been forced to work from home due to the pandemic. Whatever the reason, working from your apartment can be a huge benefit, but it also takes some commitment and organization to ensure that you maintain your productivity while enjoying a more flexible work life.

Here are a few tips for creating the perfect space in your apartment from which to work from home:

Choose the Room (or Corner!)

Selecting the space for your home office is simple if you have a spare room, but could get more difficult in a smaller apartment or if more than one of you who needs room to work. You may need to adapt space in a room that already serves another purpose, or make room for two of you in one room.

Before you decide, consider how much space you will need for your home office. Think about what you need to do your work, such as a desk, chair, computer, monitors, a printer, bookshelves and file cabinets. Decide where you can comfortably fit everything you need, while not impacting the rest of your living space.

Also keep in mind that when you are not working – or when you are working but no one else in your home is – you don’t want your home office to be right in the middle of everything. Wherever you choose to create your work from home space, make sure it can be private, quiet and free from distractions when need be.

Design It + Select Your Furnishings

Now that you know where your work from home space will be, can you envision what it will look like? Determine what layout makes the most sense for your work routine and then select furnishings to make it work.  And remember, a good design can make it significantly easier to work, so have some fun creating an environment that gives you energy and inspiration.

While you will want your space to be functional as soon as possible, try not to rush into big purchases and design changes before you know if they will work for you. Don’t feel pressured to buy everything at once. Use your space for a while and then you will have a feel for what you’re really missing.

Set Up Your Technology

Let’s face it – your technology is probably pretty important to the success of your work from home efforts. Working remotely means it is essential that you are able to stay connected with your office and colleagues.

If you are an employee, your company’s IT department may be able to help you set up access to the network, and possibly help you to set up your computer, printer, and other necessary gadgets. Also be sure to check for approval to remotely access work material, if necessary.

If you run your own business, you can use a tech service to help you get up and running. They can help you determine what technology you will need to work effectively and efficiently, and they can provide insight on web-based apps that make working remotely easy.

Having the capability to work from home has never been more important, and an apartment optimized for working from home is poised to become the latest must-have amenity.
