All tours begin at 6:30 pm with a 30-minute walk, followed at 7:00 pm by a 60-minute talk (45-minute presentation followed by questions) in the Caretaker’s Residence. The two tree tours will be all walking tours beginning at 6:30 pm. Guests are asked to meet at the northwest entrance of the Caretaker’s Residence, in the center of Goodale Park. Refreshments and light snacks will be provided.
July 13 – Summer Tree Tour
What’s the deal with Goodale’s trees? Why do we post about them so much? It’s because we have a great collection of trees that we’re really proud of! Want to learn more? Join board member and arborist Rick Frantz as he shares interesting facts about some of the park’s trees. Historical notes, medicinal uses and peculiarities will be noted so there’s something for everyone. The only thing you’ll need to know prior is that you have an appreciation for trees!
Rick Frantz, GIS Analyst, City of Dublin, Friends of Goodale Park Trustee and Arborist Rick Frantz graduated from The Ohio State University with a degree in Natural Resources, majoring in Urban Forestry. He has worked in Geographical Information Systems for City of Dublin, and has served as part-time City Forester for City of Powell, for the past 9 years. Rick has recently worked with Greenlawn Cemetery to catalog and map over 3,000 trees, creating a user-friendly tree inventory for the organization. Rick has served as a Friends of Goodale Park Trustee and volunteer arborist since 2004. In his spare time, Rick is an avid marathoner, having completed over 14 marathons!
July 20 – Perennials Packing a Powerful Punch
Gardeners that know use perennials in their landscapes. Long life, terrific seasonal interest, beauty and low-maintenance are just some of the benefits of adding herbaceous perennials to gardens. Hear details about tried-and-true favorites while discovering a few new plants to add to your palate.
Dr. Mark Miller, Outreach Education Manager, Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens
Dr. Mark Miller is a graduate of The Ohio State University (Horticulture/Environment & Natural Resources). He is a past president of and currently serves on the board of Friends of the Topiary Park, is an OSU Extension Advisory Committee member, has served as Auctions Host for Friends of Chadwick Arboretum for the past 20 years, and is a Life Member of the North American Association of Environmental Education. Dr. Miller has over 35 years of experience in horticulture, and we are proud to welcome him back to present for us for the third year in a row.
July 27 – Powder Room
All natural body care products are very popular. Creating your own products can be fun and easy to do as well as economical. Using basic kitchen ingredients, learn how to craft your own powder room essentials such as shaving cream, deodorant, and toothpaste. Take home samples and recipes to create at home.
Brooke Sackenheim, Manager, Ohio Herb Education Center
In her twenties, Brooke discovered hiking and became interested in plants, deciding to study medicinal herbs after going on a weed walk with an herbalist in Portland, OR. Brooke completed her first intensive study in 2002 and has since continued her studies since. Currently, Brooke is completing Aviva Romm’s Herbal Medicine for Women program. She studies the Traditional Western Herbalism perspective, which focuses on the European and Native American uses of herbs. She focuses on simple teaching techniques to help people incorporate herbs into their daily lives. Some of Brooke’s favorite of uses of herbs is to incorporate them into traditional food, casseroles, soups and drinks. She also enjoys making herbal honeys, syrups and lip balms. Brooke is inspired by the natural world and smiles when she sees children discover plants. She began working for the Ohio Herb Education Center in 2012.
August 10 – History and Nature at Green Lawn Cemetery
Established in 1848, Green Lawn Cemetery is central Ohio’s largest and most prestigious historical cemetery. Found in its story is not only the history of Columbus but also the natural history of Ohio, as the cemetery preserves a remnant of native mixed oak forest and natural topography. An arboretum and part of an Audubon Important Bird Area, Green Lawn is truly a “very special park”, and our presentation will explore this Columbus gem and inspire future visits! Randy Rogers is on the board of Green Lawn Cemetery, Cedar Bog Nature Preserve, and the Ohio Ornithological Society, and has volunteered with the Metro Parks for the last 17 years. He holds a B.S. in Recreation and Wildlife from Ohio University, and is retired after 28 years of service as a major in the Ohio Army National Guard.
October 19 – Fall Tree Tour
There’s no better time for trees than the fall! (OK, maybe when the magnolias are in bloom, that’s better, but autumn is a solid second!) Board member and arborist Rick Frantz is back with a brand-new tree tour filled with fall and folklore. Join us for a wonderful walk in Goodale Park.
